410 Stainless UNS S41000
410 is hardenable, martensitic alloy that is designed for thigh stress part that require high ductility as well as good corrosion resistance. Working temperatures up to 1200f (649c) are acceptable.
Applications: 410 is widely used in blades and buckets and bucket covers for compressors and steam turbines, turbine wheels and valves, aircraft parts, also pump and pump shafts.

Heat Treatment
- Annealing:
- typical Heat to 1200/1400 F (649/760c) heat uniformly and remove from furnace cool in air. Brinell hardness expected approximately 187. You can also anneal for maximum softness heat 1500/1650f (816/899c) then cool slowly in furnace. Approximate brinell 155 can be expected. Foe cleaner cutting it may be desirable to lower the annealing temperature.
- Hardening:
- Heat 1750/1850f (954/1010c) soak at heat, quench in oil. You may also harden in air.
- Tempering:
- Can be performed at 750/1050f (399/566c) reduced corrosion resistance can be expected by tempering, but may be necessary to obtain physical properties desired.
- Machinability:
- 410 in the annealed condition, dead soft, is tough and smearing. machining is better in the tempered condition.
